Our national parks represent a treasure available to Americans of all kinds. Because they are located in all regions of the nation, most everyone can visit one or more of them at some time or other. Take a look at the NPS website for "The Park of the Week," or make visitor reservations here.
Varied and beautiful, national parks were set aside as lands for us. In a way they belong to us. And as such, we have the privilege of traveling to explore them, enjoy them, and value them as places to restore our souls.
From lush woodlands to arid deserts they are small or large, at sea level or high altitude. And they are in trouble. They are not being properly maintained. According to MSNBC,
As a candidate, President Bush promised to eliminate a $5 billion construction backlog in national parks. Yet under his watch, the amount of unfinished maintenance may have doubled, worsening an already bleak picture.
Let your legislator know that it is important to pay attention to our National Parks. They are degrading at an alarming rate. The parks belong to you. Don't let them become victims of neglect.
