The dream's a drama - your dream maker is the genius, the author of your dreams. Answering the following questions about your dream is the first step in interpreting the dream for yourself, in untangeling its hidden message.
- The setting - where and when does the dream take place?
- The characters - who are the people or other beings in your dream?
- The way you were in the dream - were you observing the action or participating?
- The plot - the story that unfolds during the dream; what happens to the characters?
- The symbols - colors, numerals or numbers, any exaggerations of one or more elements?
- The dream's tone - what were your feelings during, and upon waking up, from the dream?
What could be the title of your dream? Often the first phrase or idea that comes to mind is the best title. The dream's title often suggests the theme of the dream.
How does the dream relate to your waking life? Are there associations or antecedents that occur to you as you think about your own "day material"? Can you see any "triggers" for what was in the dream?
All of these questions can be useful as you think about your dream or as you write in your dream journal. You are your own best detective.
