The American Bald Eagle, our "national bird," has made it off the endangered species list. That a triumph for the environmental and wild life movements!
The now-banned pesticide, DDT, was almost the bird's downfall a few years ago. It made the eagles' egg shells too delicate to "carry the embryos to term." The number of mating pairs fell to a dangerous low, and sightings became rare. Wisely, the birds retreated to habitats far from the hand of man - and eventually gained the numbers necessary to prosper in our midst.
We are a dangerous species to innocent wild lives. We poison the air, pollute the drinking water, gobble up the land, kill each other and them, and multiply unrestrained.
"Yea" for the majestic eagle. He beat us back, at least for now.
