Wild fires in Florida are in the picture today, making the news as far away as Shanghai. Thousands of residents are being warned to stay inside because of all the smoke. To quote the Daily:
RELENTLESS wildfires burned into the early morning yesterday across Florida's Atlantic coast, taxing firefighters and overwhelming residents, some of whom tried to save their homes with garden hoses.
. . . Governor Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency on Monday as dry, windy weather worsened conditions.
"Smoke Damages Air Quality, Prison Evacuated as Wildfires Scorch Florida Everglades," is a typical headline. To quote MySpace News:
A state prison and federal detention center near the Everglades were evacuated Monday afternoon as the wildfire burned uncomfortably close to the facilities. About 2,000 people from the Everglades Correctional Institution and the Krome Detention Center were relocated to other facilities around the state.
. . . In all, firefighters were battling dozens of blazes from Brevard County on the Atlantic coast south to Miami-Dade County that have burned more than 78,000 acres, said Gerry LaCavera, a wildfire spokesman with the state Division of Forestry.
Wildfires have also scorched another 25,000 acres of Lake Okeechobee's drought-exposed bottom
Depending on where you live -- For "The Impatient Patient, " it has been a happy return to Florida, despite the wildfires. A naturalist from neighboring Cumberland Island, Georgia, talks about the ecological need for wild fires. According to USA Today, the fire is only 30% contained and burning in an area where an endangered bird species lives, namely the Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow. On CNN, "Scottyreport" is an interesting image with a fascinating contrast between water and smoke. Today's illustrating image is a generic wildfire picture, not one of Florida.
