North Central Texas, 8/4/08.
We are in the grip of a severe heatwave. Today it is predicted that the area will lose electrical power between 3 & 5 PM as the AC tries to keep up with the 107 to 110 degrees temp.
Carol and I use fans to circulate the air, and keep the AC set at 79-80 degrees. With a heat pump you have to keep the inside-the-home temp under control, starting early in the day. The AC unit is efficient in keeping the home 20 degrees cooler than the outside temp. Beyond that it has to work very hard and sometimes simply cannot keep up. We're OK but many in the area are not. People will die this afternoon. it is sad but many folks have no resources in shelter, friends or money.
Many local buildings and shelters are opened to those in need, but, for a variety of reasons, some won't be able to get there. Our local leaders are trying their best. In fact, they have enlisted postal carriers, police, church organizations, and other groups to advise them of people in need so something can be done. Local TV and Radio are askinf everyone to do what they can to help others.
We can just hope for the best today. Relief is in sight later in the week.
My topical post today at South by Southwest and The Reaction is about congressional politics.
