An untold story

The girl at the back of the bunch of kids could be me. It isn't but I looked a lot like her. This 1936 picture was taken in Texas between Dallas and Austin. Why were they taking this trip? Was it fun or because of some more serious reason.? What is the family's story?
Were they happy? Did Dad take the picture? What is Mom holding? What is the stuff on the ground? Where is the road? Was it one of those hot Texas days that made the kids grim? I don't think so, because Mom's got a sweater on. So many questions . . .
I was born only the next year - a thousand miles north of here - so I am curious. Any ideas?
